“The Pursuit of Power”

The History Graduate Student Association at Florida State University is pleased to host the 13^th Annual Southeast Regional Graduate Student Conference on March 3, 2023 in person at Florida State University. The theme for this year’s conference is “The Pursuit of Power.” We are interested in papers that explore states, institutions, and individual pursuits of power and control. Power uses a variety of means such as discrimination, colonialism, and imperialism in order to subjugate and oppress. There is also power in resistance to these forces and the struggle of power is often seen throughout history. While we highly encourage interacting with this theme, the committee welcomes papers from any thematic, chronological, and geographic perspective.

Graduate students at any level in the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to participate in this collegial environment. This conference seeks to both serve as a great starting conference for new graduate students and as a ground for testing ideas and receiving feedback from peers and senior academics for advanced students. Awards for excellence will be presented to the best overall Ph.D. and MA papers.

The deadline for applications is December 16, 2022.

We accept both complete panels and individual papers. Individual submissions should include a 300-word (or less) abstract, and a curriculum vitae. Panel proposals should include a 200-word description of the panel’s topic as well as the individual abstracts and a curriculum vitae.

Additional Information for Presenters
Each room will be equipped with a Windows-based computer, screen, and sound system. We strongly encourage presenters to email PowerPoints, etc. before the conference or to bring a flash drive with the presentation on it.

Parking
Most Florida State Parking Lots are reserved for FSU students, faculty, and staff until about 4:30/5:00PM on Fridays. Lots are clearly marked with when parking rules are in effect.
