Dissertation topic: “The Few, the Proud: Gender and the Marine Corps Body”

Bio: Patterson is a PhD candidate at Florida State University, focusing on gender and the U.S. Military. She is currently working on her dissertation, titled “The Few, the Proud: Gender and the Marine Corps Body.” This project examines change and continuity in masculinity and femininity in the Marine Corps from World War I to the first Gulf War as it is expressed on the body. She received an M.A. in History from Florida State University in 2014 and an M.A. in Anthropology from the University of West Florida in 2013, where she taught introductory courses in Anthropology. Patterson presented several papers based on her master’s thesis, including “Migration and Labor in 19th-Century Pensacola” at the 2015 Annual Meeting and Symposium of the Florida Historical Society, “Using Grave Markers to Identify Trends in Immigration” at the 2013 Society for American Archaeology Annual Meeting, and “Using Grave Markers to Identify Trends in Immigration” at the 2012 Southeastern Archaeological Conference. More recently, she has presented papers on the life of journalist Barbara Frye at the 2016 Annual Meeting and Symposium of the Florida Historical Society and women’s military recruitment posters during World War II at the 2017 American Historical Association Annual Meeting. Patterson currently teaches courses on Native American history in World War II and the postwar period.
