The History Graduate Student Association at Florida State University is pleased to host the 13^th Annual Southeast Regional Graduate Student Conference on March 3, 2023 in person at Florida State University. The theme for this year’s conference is “The Pursuit of Power.” We are interested in papers that explore states, institutions, and individual pursuits of power and control. Power uses a variety of means such as discrimination, colonialism, and imperialism in order to subjugate and oppress. There is also power in resistance to these forces and the struggle of power is often seen throughout history. While we highly encourage interacting with this theme, the committee welcomes papers from any thematic, chronological, and geographic perspective.

Graduate students at any level in the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to participate in this collegial environment. This conference seeks to both serve as a great starting conference for new graduate students and as a ground for testing ideas and receiving feedback from peers and senior academics for advanced students. Awards for excellence will be presented to the best overall Ph.D. and MA papers.

Keynote Speaker

We are pleased to announce that Dr. John Corrigan, Lucius Moody Bristol Distinguished Professor of Religion, Professor of History, and a Distinguished Research Professor in the Department of Religion at Florida State will present the Keynote Speech. Information on Dr. Corrigan can be found here.

Professional Headshot Opportunity

We are happy to announce that once again we will be offering our attendees the opportunity to take professional headshots. If you are interested in professional headshots, we will have Danielle from 3 Muses Photography offer to take them during the lunch hour at the conference. The headshots are free to take and will be emailed to you after the conference. You are able to take as many photos as you would like and purchase only the digital files that you want.

The deadline for applications is January 6, 2023.

We accept both complete panels and individual papers. Individual submissions should include a 300-word (or less) abstract, and a curriculum vitae. Panel proposals should include a 200-word description of the panel’s topic as well as the individual abstracts and a curriculum vitae.

Additional Information for Presenters
Each room will be equipped with a Windows-based computer, screen, and sound system. We strongly encourage presenters to email PowerPoints, etc. before the conference or to bring a flash drive with the presentation on it.

Parking
Most Florida State Parking Lots are reserved for FSU students, faculty, and staff until about 4:30/5:00PM on Fridays. Lots are clearly marked with when parking rules are in effect.

The History Graduate Student Association at Florida State University is pleased to host the 12^th Annual Southeast Regional Graduate Student Conference on April 1, 2022 in Tallahassee, Florida. The theme for the conference is “Revisiting and Reimagining: Heritage, Identity, and History.” Conference panels will explore history through the lenses of identity and heritage, with special emphasis on the ways in which people remember and construct a collective past from a variety of disciplinary perspectives. While we are particularly interested in these themes, the committee also welcomes papers from any thematic, chronological, and geographic perspective. The conference is designed to foster a collaborative academic environment between and among graduate students of various disciplines and with faculty.

Graduate students at any level in the humanities and social sciences are encouraged to participate in this collegial environment. Our conference offers an opportunity for students to explore a conference setting, meet fellow graduate students, and visit a new department. Advanced students will find fertile ground for testing their ideas and for receiving feedback from peers and senior academics. We hope you will join us.
